What is Occupational Therapy?

An often overlooked service that can change lives...

Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations).

Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability. At Sensational OT, I provide services to children 0-18 years, and I focus on the occupations that are most important in this span of time.

Occupational therapy services typically include:

  • an individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the child’s goals,

  • customized intervention to improve the child's ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals, and

  • a progress report to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the intervention plan.

Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment and/or task to fit the child, and the child is an integral part of the therapy team. It is an evidence-based practice deeply rooted in science. (AOTA, 2020)

Developmental Evaluation

This is where OT starts. With a Physician Referral, I can evaluate your child to determine their baseline skills so that we can determine if they are reaching their developmental milestones. If your child is below age level, we will discuss our next steps and create a plan of care that includes goals that are addressed through  individual and/or group intervention.

Individual Services

This is where the hardworking begins. These services will be one on one, evidence based interventions that address your child's goals so that they can start to develop skills that can make them more independent in the skills that mean the most to them, across all environments that are important to their lives.

Group Services

If social-emotional skills, body awareness, play, and/or other important skills are a focus of intervention, it may be recommended that the child participates in group intervention with 2 or more peers so that they can do more than just learn those skills, they can also put them into practice.
